Purple Class

Our topic this term is

Purple Class have as usual been very busy.  We've had a couple of amazing music sessions with Charis, Heather and Jordan from 'Live Music Now',  taken part in a special sports event at Bedford Athletics Stadium and visited the Royal Philharmonic Virtual Orchestra installation in Bedford.

We had a fantastic time at Hunstanton having a fish and chip lunch, visiting the Sea Life Centre and relaxing on the beach before a very long journey home!

Purple Class have been improvising in music sessions with Mark and Sarah from Soundsmiths.

We revisited Duxford Imperial War Museum this week as last time we went we only saw a fraction of what was on offer.  We still haven't managed to see it all but did visit the tank museum at the very far end where we walked through first world war trenches and boarded a D-Day landing craft.  We also managed to have a look at some first and second world war aircraft like the Spitfire and Hurricane and learn a little about how aircraft actually fly.

Purple Class revisited Marston Vale Forest Centre.  We last went early in the year so wanted to see what had changed now that we are heading towards summer and the weather is a little warmer.  We had a very chilly start after everyone brought their sun hats, cream and sunglasses to school but by lunchtime the sun was breaking through and we had a lovely warm afternoon.  We saw a whole range of wildlife including dragonflies and damselflies and would possibly have seen a few more birds in the bird hide if certain members of staff had managed to be a bit quieter in there!!

Our new minibus arrived today and was presented by Mike Selvey from the Lord's Taverners who played cricket for England in the 1970's.

Story massage in PSHE!

Purple Class looked very stylish celebrating the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan in their red white and blue outfits.

We had a beautiful sunny day for our visit to the RSPB at Sandy.  Linda who works there showed us around the house and garden and told us all about their history.  The house was originally built for Sir Robert Peel who was the founder of the modern police force and twice Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and has been owned by the RSPB since the 1960's.

Purple Class have been finding tasty salad recipes.  We made shopping lists, bought our ingredients, worked with a partner to make our salads then taste tested them all.  The general consensus was that they were delicious!

We visited the garden centre to buy some more plants for our outdoor pots.

Please have a look at our Curriculum Overview document to see what we will be learning about.

We went to Marston Vale Forest Centre to help celebrate the International Day of Forests.  On our walk around we completed lots of different activities such as identifying leaves and animal poo, drawing our surroundings, hugging trees and making outdoor art and sculptures from found things. We all wore something green as art of our celebrations.

Purple and some of Orange Class went to Kempston Fire Station.  Ed, Mark and Piers showed us all the different equipment they use to fight fires and rescue animals.

We went shopping to buy ingredients for making omelettes.  We had to follow a shopping list, decide which items we might find where in the supermarket, compare prices so we got the best value and make sure that all items would still be within their sell by dates when we needed to use them.

Secondary students attended the Bedfordshire Festival of Music and Drama at Kings House Conference Centre.  We worked with Mark and Sarah from Soundsmiths to perform 'When the Saints go Marching in' using switches, chime bars, singing and signing.  Well done everyone for all your hard work and an amazing performance.

We had a great trip to Duxford Imperial War Museum which was very kindly funded by Happy Days.  We all got a chance to go on board several different planes including the first ever Concorde.

Purple Class have had fun celebrating World Book Day.

This week we have been focusing on internet safety.  We worked together to make posters to illustrate the 5 'SMART' rules of keeping safe on the internet.

S - Safe - keep your personal information safe.

M - Meet - meeting someone you've only been in contact with online can be very dangerous.  Online friends are still strangers.

A - Accepting - be careful when accepting emails, texts or other information from sources you don't know or recognise.

R - Reliable - information online is not always accurate or true.  Always check information.

T - Tell - a parent, carer or other trusted adult if you are worried or unhappy about things you have seen online or if you or someone you know is being bullied online.

We've been learning about mountaineers and the type of equipment they would use.  Purple Class decided to model some of it!

Purple Class performed a lovely assembly for the rest of the school all about volcanoes.  We had lots of facts, a dance re-enactment of a volcano erupting and our own mini science experiment to create a volcanic eruption!

Congratulations to Purple Class students who represented the school at a Boccia contest where our school teams came 2nd, 3rd and 4th out of 16 teams.  What a brilliant effort well done!

Purple Class have been getting into the festive spirit with Christmas shopping at Milton Keynes and a lovely Christmas lunch at The Maypole.  Thank you very much to Ridgeway School Association for giving the students £10 to buy a present of their choice.

The Rotary Club and Marston Vale Forest Centre have been helping us to plant over 700 trees around our school grounds.  All the students in Purple Class  worked very hard to feed our lovely volunteers over the 2 days they were with us providing fresh baguettes and baked potatoes for lunch plus as much tea and coffee as they could drink!

We have been raising money for Children in Need by doing hair and painting nails, treasure hunting, Connect 4 competition, Karaoke and pin the eye patch on Pudsey.

Purple Class visited the RSPB at Sandy where we hunted for fungi, birds, plants and other animals as part of our topic on 'The Great Outdoors'.

Purple Class had a great time at Wrest Park.  We had a scavenger hunt around the house and gardens and were very lucky to have beautiful if slightly windy weather on the day.

We have been practising our money handling and life skills at Frosts Garden Centre.

We had a lovely trip to Jordan's Mill and gardens.

We have been practising our shopping skills at the supermarket.

Well done Purple Class for being so amazing and trying so hard at our school sports day.

Purple Class visited 'Go Outdoors' as part of our Autumn term topic on 'The Great Outdoors'.  We had a great time looking at all the different equipment you need for outdoor activities.

We have been developing our basic skills in cookery and making toasted sandwiches.

As part of our topic on 'The Great Outdoors' we learnt how to put up a tent.
